Given the pace of Michael Jackson's post-Thriller release schedule, it's striking that Off the Wall appeared between two albums with his brothers, Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980), on which the twentysomething phenomenon was also fully engaged. Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, Off the Wall redefined how much Michael might do.
Tracks like "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Rock with You," the title cut (all Top 10 singles), and "Burn this Disco Out" not only consolidated his dance-floor power, but showed just how soulful and varied his vocals could get on uptempo material. Artistic role models like James Brown and Jackie Wilson echo through the mixes, but these were Jackson's leaps forward. The addition of pure pop confection--Paul McCartney's "Girlfriend," Stevie Wonder's "I Can't Help It"--further fleshed out the star's young-adult persona and helped make Off the Wall among the most fondly remembered of all his solo work. This special edition features two magic home demos and entertaining, insightful interviews of producer Quincy Jones and "Rock with You" composer Rod Temperton. --Rickey Wright

I love this album! It relaxes me and whenever I am home I just listen to it and think of Michael.
'Rock with you' is my all-time fave MJ song and there are many more on this album that I like: Don't stop til you get enough, Get on the floor and I Can't Help It.
This is a classic album for any musical tastes.

One thing about disco music is that it often prides itself on its style and glitz. And it's right to do so since modern dance music is almost always about style over substance. "Off The Wall" however takes on this whole new persona that has always been quite alien to dance music. It transcends the norms of the genre in that it comes off as a very serious musical statement. One reason why is that the songwriting here is simply far stronger than the average disco album released at the time. Sure there's mostly love songs and partying anthems here but the arrangements are superior and the music is simply way more diverse. Most disco albums are not going to have lush, string swept ballads like, "She's Out Of My Life" nor hard hitting stompers like, "Get On The Floor".
But main reason why this album works so well is not just the music but the fact that it's Michael Jackson as the dance leader here. Jackson had already built a massive reputation and image from his days in the Jackson Five so his very presence here does wonders for the overall listening experience. No one can imagine anybody else singing such classics as "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" and "Workin' Day And Night". And over the years, "Off The Wall" has only grown in popularity since the release of such immortal albums as "Thriller" and "Bad" and the subsequent rise of Jackson's stardom. So in that respect, this album does have a lot of style like most disco does. It just has way more of it and a more sophisticated brand than most other 70s disco albums.
Anybody who likes disco music is gonna love this album. Even some people who hate dance music are probably going to like what's presented here. Yet another thing that separates this recording from traditional disco is its unity and cohesion. Sure there are hit single here, but the album speaks on its own accord. After all, it has the perfect climax: "Burn This Disco Out" which describes precisely what was happening to disco music when the album was released.
Michael has released bigger albums that sold more copies, but nothing he did after this would ever sound like quite like it nor be such a perfect representation of its time. And there is a big difference between being a representation of your time and being simply an artifact.

I really love his albums, MJ is one-of-a-kind, nobody is going to be like him, it's a shame he's gone to soon, but he will live forever in ours hearts.
This album is really a piece of art, I recommend you if you're a MJ's fan.
